Biography

Her work is about folding, wrapping and connecting.
She uses these methods to find the relations between writing, language and reality.
Initially her specialization was ceramics, she plied thin, small porcelain cloths. Testing the limits, she added colors and patterns to this delicate material.
Her recent work comprises translating this quest into very different materials such as plastics, aluminum and rubber. This transition results in an increasing size of her pieces.
Using rubber sheet, bands of polymers and aluminum, she creates large physical volumes with a psychological charge. There appearance is often uncomfortable and displays odd elements. These create the sense that not everything is exactly what it appear to be.
The natural – without any emphasis or doubt- manner in which the sculptures claim their space is the most surprising element in the recent work of Marga Knaven.

Boijmans van Beuningen

Several years ago a number of her objects were acquired by the renowned Dutch Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam:
Tea sets with met whimsical cups and saucers. Nowadays she works with near transparent, wafer-thin ceramic 'cloth', folded, draped, crumpled, apparently frozen ... Beautiful!
